Submission Guidelines

  • Submission deadline: 11:59 p.m. on October 17, 2025

  • Notification: mid-November

  • Entry fee: $0

  • Registration fee: $20 (This fee is to be paid by participants after being informed of acceptance and will exclusively be used to cover venue costs.)

  • Number of submissions allowed: 2 (but it is likely that only 1 will be selected)

  • Submission Length: 15 minute maximum per submission

  • Solo performer-composers and solo improvisers (with or without electronics) are encouraged to apply.

  • Applicants may have up to one collaborator (duos): either two improvising performers or for composed works, the composer must be one of the performers.

  • Submissions must either be composed by the performer(s) or original improvisations by the performer(s) (structured improvisation and/or free improvisation and anything in between).

  • Submissions of traditional and experimental aesthetics plus everything between and beyond are all welcome.

  • For composed works, preference will be given to works composed within the last 10 years. Works may have been performed before (a world premiere performance is not a requirement).

  • Submissions that include electronics will be considered but a complete description of technical needs will be required (this should include what hardware might be needed from Ohio State and/or what hardware the performer is proposing to bring). At this time, due to practicality and available equipment, only two-channel stereo sound will be available.

  • Submissions including piano must indicate if the piano will need to be prepared.

  • Submissions including percussion must indicate if equipment needs to be borrowed from Ohio State University. Availability of percussion equipment will be extremely limited. It is advised that selected participants plan to bring as much of their own equipment as possible.

  • Both professional and student submissions will be considered.

  • No funding is available for travel/stay/meals for the symposium.
